There are numerous misconceptions regarding the new VLSFO (Very Low Sulfur Fuel Oil) fuel with a 0.5% sulfur maximum. Since each supplier has their unique method of blending or refining, we need to make sure that we send the normal specification to the engineers onboard to ensure clarity and prevent any issues. We haven’t yet seen any quality claims on the VLSFO supply. “There is no VLSFO specification”?
This is a false impression!
We are required to provide the ISO 8217:2017 specifications with 0.5% sulphur limits as of the beginning of 2020. However, this led to uncertainty because VLSFO specifications were not specifically published for this new fuel.

Today’s viscosity ranges are extensive because each provider has their blending method. Therefore, it appears that there are no standardized specifications for VLSFO, yet VLSFOs (just like HSFOs) are blends that need to adhere to ISO 8217 requirements to be viable from a business standpoint.
